City of Los Angeles Master Artist Award COLA exhibit
“The Invisible Women” is an installation I created for the COLA award 2022-23 (City of Los Angeles Master Artist Award). Presented at the Municipal Art Gallery at the Barnsdall Art Park, I created a series of works that investigate how women and especially Asian women are perceived and depicted. I am incorporating mythological images of women painted over found photographs of Asian women from my archive. In combination with these, I also presented my research material on the exotification of the foreign bodies depicted in the 17th and 18th C folio books published in Holland which shaped the perceptions about the exotic lands in European psyche which persists to this day, and Chinoiserie ceramic objects found in flea markets and vintage stores in Rome. The Barnsdall Park is located in Hollywood, and I also wanted to engage with Hollywood history and incorporated photographs of Anna Mae Wong as part of the installation to celebrate her achievement and to present the challenges that she went through as a minority actress in Hollywood in the 1930’s
